Gardening the African Way

The growing season is well and truly underway in the UK, but in Munsieville, South Africa, it's harvest time. Across this fractured township, the central focus for the resources of Root and Branch Foundation, Covid-19 has made a bad nutrition situation much worse. Hundreds of children are hungry and well over half of the 18,000 children in the Munsieville catchment area have very limited access to the fresh vegetables needed for healthy growth.

Our partners, The Thoughtful Path Charity has been hard at work, encouraging families and community members to turn every available patch of ground into a productive space for growing beans, cabbage, spinach and broccoli. 18 months before the pandemic started spreading around the globe, a team of teenagers from churches in Chesham, UK, went to Munsieville to work with scores of families to help them create small vegetable gardens - gardens that have become a vital lifeline during the Covid crisis.

This week, team members of The Thoughtful Path, Munsieville have helped gather in the latest veggie harvest from their large community garden, distributing its bounty to local shack-dwelling children.

Every plant bought from rootandbranchworld.org contributes to life-giving initiatives such as this.
