As with many varieties, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Glam Rock' produces widely different colour tones depending on the soil pH. If the soil is neutral to alkaline (a pH of 7 to 14) then flowers will be more pink-red. In acid soils (pH less than 7) the flowers will tend to be more purple-blue in their colouration, with blooms being bluer, the lower the pH gets. In addition to this, Hydrangeas are well known for their flowers changing colour as the season progresses. These colour changes can be quite dramatic from bud break to mature bloom.
